Arsenic DNA

The breakthrough discovery by Dr. Felisa Wolfe-Simon and her team about the Arsenic eating bacteria from Mono Lake in California has just opened new dimensions in the world of sci-fiction writers and those of us who live in the world of unbounded imagination. Nothing is impossible!

The Bacteria finds Arsenic great.

Phosphorus, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and sulphur have long been thought to be essential for all Life.
Now this is no more the case. Textbooks have to be rewritten; but hold on it could be too early. Maybe sci-fi writers would be the ones excited by the whole thing. Now its Arsenic. Maybe tomorrow it would be something else. Time will tell.

Phosphorus is part of DNA, RNA and ATP(building blocks of life). It “was” an essential element for all living cells. But all this is coming to nought. And now Arsenic has taken over the spot. Arsenic is poisonous to most living organisms BUT…..

A bacterium strain known as GFAJ-1 can grow in the arsenic and adapt to arsenic growing to about 50 percent larger than cells grown with phosphorus, but with large, empty internal spaces. The bacteria were able to use arsenic to build its DNA, RNA, proteins, and cell membranes.

So out there could be micro-organisms that have a different DNA and RNA from our earthly living matter.

Great adaptability of our life forms.

Imagine Humans going into space to a new planet and have to change their diet resulting in a new DNA, RNA structure and size. I suppose they do not have to carry oxygen too. They just end up breathing one of the gases and everything available including “poison” and would be fine, like the arsenic eating bacteria.

So there could be other DNA structures out there, resembling other forms of life?

But what would happen to their Brain power? How would they look like?
Giants? Bodies with lots of spaces between. Fragile?

Mind boggling!

Those with unlimited imagination would be able to come up with a best sci-fiction seller.
I cannot wait to get my hands on one.

So what do we know about the mysteries of LIFE? So what about extraterrestrial life? In what form does it exist. Is it not the reason why we have missed it in our search so far. Is it in a different FORM?

Maybe now we can!

Interesting find and view. Although, I do not believe in the total evolution of organisms, I do see the evidence of adaptation. And without adaptation, both physically and mentally, we could not sustain life.

Yes hemlock1981 I agree that without adaptation one is more or less dead. They say education is all about being able to adapt to different new experiences.
